HP 15-ay013nr 15.6" Full-HD Laptop (6th Generation Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) with Windows 10

HP 15-ay013nr 15.6" Full-HD Laptop (6th Generation Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) with Windows 10

  • 15.6" Full-HD (1920 x 1080) screen
  • Intel Core i5 6200U, 2.3GHz, Dual-Core Processor
  • 8GB DDR3L-SDRAM Memory
  • 128GB Solid-State Drive; Super-Multi DVD Burner

The latest HP 15-ay013nr laptop features a solid design, stable performance, a Full HD screen, and decent battery life for day-to-day home/office use.
THE GOOD: Strong performance especially on general tasks. True Full HD screen.

The latest HP 15-ay013nr, a midrange desktop-replacement laptop, has been updated with new features that push it from average to top of the class. Its other iteration –that we reviewed earlier– HP 15-ay011nr was one of the reasonably priced, large screen laptops with a fast processor and good battery life. Although released at the same time, we dinged it for having a slow 1TB 5,400RPM hard drive, since many midrange laptops now come out with snappier solid-state-drives (SSDs). HP rectifies those shortcomings with the HP 15-ay013nr but still maintains the Full-HD (1920 x 1080) screen that wowed many of us in the HP 15-ay011nr. All that along with a fast 128GB SSD, 8GB memory and decent battery life, help the latest HP 15-ay013nr earn our Editors’ Choice for midrange desktop replacement laptops.

Design

The HP 15-ay013nr isn’t any thinner than rivals, which is attributed to the fact that while other manufacturers are eschewing the optical drive, we still have it in this model. It comes in at It comes in at 0.95 by 15.12 by 10.02 inches (HWD), and weighs in at just over four pounds (4.65 pounds), which is slightly lighter than the HP 15-ay011nr’s 4.73 pounds. It’s still a full sized laptop overall, thanks to its 15.6-inch screen, which has a 1,920 by 1080 resolution, good for 1080p HD videos. The full-HD resolutions something we’ve previously seen mostly on pricier systems. It does not quite offer the clarity or wide viewing angles of an In-Plane-Switching (IPS) screen, but the picture is sharp and can be viewed reasonably well from most angles. More expensive midrange systems like theAcer Aspire R14 R3-471T-77HT and the Lenovo Edge 15 lack IPS displays as well, and theASUS Zenbook Pro UX501VW-DS71T, which does have one, will have you throw in more bucks.
The display doesn’t support touch, but depending on your needs, that might not be a deal breaker as such. In fact, a touch screen would only serve to drive up the system’s price further, and with the ore-installed Windows 10, dependence on touch navigation has been reduced unlike its predecessor Windows 8/8.1. If you really need a touch screen, you can perhaps look at the Lenovo Edge 15 or the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15, though you will generally spend more for the touch functionality. Here you also get a well-designed, comfortable keyboard and full numeric pad with keys that provide a satisfying click and a pleasant soft feel, though no back-lighting.

Main features81oM6xknE0L._SL1500_

The HP 15-ay013nr has a dual-core 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 6200U processor (turbo up to 2.8GHz), 8GB system memory and an integrated Intel HD 520 graphics card. Yes, here you don’t have a dedicated graphics card like the Acer Aspire E5-573G-57HR, our previous Editors’ Choice, that comes with Nvidia GeForce 940M graphics card with 2GB of video memory; but that comes into consideration if you plan on gaming or running applications that are graphics-oriented.
For mid-range notebook users, the sixth generation (Skylake) processor with a CPU benchmark score of 3,900 can deliver on most tasks. Apparently, 8GB will let you keep dozens of browser tabs open simultaneously, and 1TB is more than enough for most family snapshots and music files. 1TB may eventually get a little cramped if you like to download multiple full seasons of TV shows in HD.
For gaming, the laptop won’t deliver the best experience due to lack of a dedicated graphics card. The integrated Intel HD 520 graphics will only allow you poke around some casual games, but if you need some eye candy you can look at our Editors’ Choice budget gaming laptop, the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK. With the HP 15-ay013nr you can only get not-so-good FPS: For instance, GTA5 will be playable at 25FPS at 1366 by 768 resolutions. However, for basic games like Counter-Strike you can tone up the settings and still have it run smoothly.

Other features

81EHP8t8BOL._SL1500_The system includes 8GB of memory on a single DIMM (expandable to 16GB) a faster 128SSD. This is a major improvement from its other iteration that comes with a 1TB hard drive. Here we are looking at snappy boot times and general performance improvement. In the other iteration, HP 15-ay011nr, you have a spacious 1TB hard drive which culminates in slowed booting. The 1TB hard drive rotates at 5,400 revolutions-per-minute (RPM), and we expected at least 7,200RPM in an otherwise superb machine, you can swap it with a faster SSD. However, if swapping the drives is an uphill task for you, then we are looking at the HP 15-ay013nr as an option that is hard to ignore since it already comes with a faster 128GB SSD.
Connectivity options include one USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port, a headset jack, and an Ethernet port. There’s also Bluetooth 4.0, integrated 802.11.ac wireless, and an SD card slot, and the laptop does feature a DVD burner, though not everybody needs it in 2016. The system lacks a VGA port, which can be inconvenient if you’re planning on using the system with an older VGA monitor you have in your home. The system lasted 5 hours 37 minutes on our battery rundown test, which is commendable, given its 1080p display. The Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK came ahead (7:16), with most systems like the Lenovo Edge 15 (4:39) falling well short.

Summary

The latest HP 15-ay013nr is a reasonably priced midrange desktop-replacement laptop with a lot going for it. Its improvements over its other iteration, HP 15-ay011nr, must be the faster 128GB SSD among other forward-looking technology like a Full HD display, a powerful sixth-generation Intel Core i5 processor, and strong battery life, all that look like real value for the buck for a midrange laptop. It has a larger screen, better battery life, and faster boot-times than the Acer Aspire E5-573G, our former Editors’ Choice. True, the HP 15-ay013nr is slightly behind the Acer Aspire E5-573G in matters graphics, but not prohibitively so. As such, the HP 15-ay013nr is our Editors’ Choice for midrange desktop-replacement laptops.

Dell 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (6th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-6300HQ Processor up to 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, Windows 10)

Dell 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (6th Gen Intel Quad-Core i5-6300HQ Processor up to 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, 256GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, Windows 10)

  • Intel i5-6300HQ 2.3 GHz Quad-Core (6M Cache, Turbo up to 3.2 GHz)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5
  • 8 GB DDR3L / 256 GB Solid-State Drive
  • 15.6-Inch FHD IPS, Wide-Angle, Anti Glare Screen.

The Dell Inspiron I7559-763BLK has its gaming credentials in order, including an enthusiast-oriented NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5 graphics card, a speedy quad-core 6th Gen. Intel Core i5 processor, Windows 10 Home (64-bit) preinstalled, 8GB of system memory and 256 GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) for storage, and snappy boot times.
THE GOOD: Solid gaming performance. 1080p display. 256GB SSD. Backlit keyboard.
The Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is an entry-level gaming laptop, that actually has some components that deserve the “entertainment/gaming” label. The system has its gaming credentials in order, including an enthusiast-oriented NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5 graphics card, a speedy quad-core 6th Gen. (Skylake released in August 2015) Intel Core i5 processor, Windows 10 Home (64-bit) preinstalled, 8GB of system memory and 256 GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) for storage, but doubles up in speedy boot times and performance as compared to hard drives. It stands out as a great bargain and a good bang-for-the-buck proposition. If the forward-looking capabilities and great design are anything to go by, then  the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is something we can call a step in the right direction. For that, it deserves our nod as the newest Editors’ Choice entry-level gaming laptop.

Design

It is part of the Inspiron 15 700 Series, which is optimized for work productivity and mid-range gaming performance, although it packs some of the latest specs into a light-weight, slick design. The matte black and beautiful Inspiron i7559-763BLK sports a premium-level design measuring less than an inch thick forged with aluminum and diamond-cut beveled edges that make it slimmer, thinner and lighter than other models in the Inspiron 15 7000 Series. It looks formidable, measuring 1.0 by 15.1 by 10.4 (HWD) and weighing in at about 5.67 pounds. It’s lighter than typical 17-inchers for gaming, like the Lenovo Y70 Touch (7.5 pounds), but it’s meant to be used as a desktop-replacement rather than one you’d tot around on your daily commute.
71waOn2XyZL._SL1500_The 15.6-inch is a bright spot. At 1,920 by 1,080, its resolution is lower than the 4K resolution of the Acer Aspire V 15 Nitro. We think that a 1080p display is better suited to entry-level gaming GPUs, like the NVidia GeForce GTX 950M, as the performance numbers bear out (more on that below). The screen is pre-calibrated and can be set to different modes for different usage scenarios. These include design work, gaming, office apps, movie watching, and a setting called anti-blue.
The last setting supposedly reduces blue colors to help with eye fatigue, but to our eyes it simply makes everything more sepia-toned. In the default sRGB mode, however, the display looks bright and exceptionally crisp. It has a backlit keyboard, but I predict that not everyone will be happy with the fact that the touchpad is positioned on the left.

Main features

A sixth-generation Intel i5-6300HQ 2.3 GHz Quad-Core (6 M Cache, Turbo up to 3.2 GHz based on Skylake microarchitecture) and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB GDDR5 provide adequate gaming performance and very good multimedia score on the Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK. This summer and September we’ve seen Intel release many Skylake-based processors and the Intel i5-6300HQ in this unit is part of the new releases.Currently, there doesn’t seem to be benchmark scores online for this processors just yet, but it’s expected to reach similar performance to some “regular” (not power efficient) i7s such as the i7-4712HQ.715OBXR7iEL._SL1500_
That processor gets around 7500 CPU Mark points which is excellent, and since i5-6300HQ should get more or less the same you can pretty much do anything on this computer and if there’s a bottleneck, it won’t be this processor for sure. With this processors, the system stays cool even after several hours of operation and offers great performance and speed with top class functionality and a feature set .
On the game grid, the system will surely achieve rock-solid frame rates at Medium-quality (1,366 by 768 resolution), however pushing the settings higher will make the system stutter. You should be able to get these systems playing smoothly at native resolution, but it will involve some tweaking with antialiasing and quality settings. The only entry-level system that could play most modern game titles smoothly at Ultra-quality settings at its native 1080p resolution is theAlienware 15. The latest generation of Core i5 processors performs more or less like the Intel i7-4712HQ which has a Passmark score of 7635 today (minus the hyper threading of the i7), helps improve battery life (of 6-cell lithium ion battery) so you can have it unplugged longer despite having a Thermal Design Power of 45 watts. This means that the Inspiron i7559-763BLK’s performance comes closer to Core i7-powered systems that cost slightly more, like the Dell XPS 15, the 17-inch ASUS X755JA-DS71and the gaming MSI GT72 Dominator-406.

Other features

Inside, the storage is both speedy and spacious, thanks to a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD) which is better than the slower hard drives. If the space appears limited, you have an easy solution to get more storage by putting your files in various online cloud services. There also seems to be mSATA slot for an extra SSD if you wish to install one. The 15.6″ screen of Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK comes with all the bells and whistles: IPS display (superior to cheap TN panels in terms of colors and viewing angles), anti-glare coating and 1920×1080 resolution. Touch is not supported, but for gaming purposes such a display should be very decent at least. A 1280×720 webcam is available on Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK, you’re good to film videos or chat with your friends on Skype, with Waves MaxxAudio Pro for clear sound output.
61DuctJ7EwL._SL1500_Connectivity is excellent. The system comes with three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI-out is also present, although DisplayPort is missing which is quite a drawback, and might upset some hardcore gamers. Optical drive isn’t something you find here either; if you need to install games from discs you’d better get an external DVD drive. Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK unit connects to Internet via 802.11 A/C + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter.
There’s also integrated 1000Mbps controller with RJ-45 port in case you want to connect using wire. The 6-cell 74Whr battery is non-replaceable battery, as in you can’t just pop it out without removing the bottom cover. Dell claims that it can go for 10+ hours-a beefy one, but I don’t think you’re getting more than 4 hours if you’re gaming. If surfing the web etc. you should end up with more than 4 hours, though.

Summary

The Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK is a good choice if you’re a content-creation hobbyists who likes to indulge in gaming once in a while. The latest Core i5 processor, brilliant screen, and clear speaker will definitely take home entertainment to the next level and even make creating the next YouTube masterpiece a pleasant experience. On the flipside, if you’re on a budget the price is right to grab it as your entry-level gaming rig or consider the Asus K501UX Gaming Laptop  (which we reviewed here) that comes really close in gaming performance and spots a premium design.

Main Features
Powering the ASUS F556UA-AS54 are a sixth-generation (Skylake), 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 6200U processor (with Turbo up to 2.8GHz), 8GB of memory and integrated Intel HD 520 graphics. Unlike, our Editors’ Choice the Acer Aspire E5-573G-57HR, that comes with a dedicated Nvidia GeForce 940M graphics card with 2GB of video memory, the performance is still snappy since you won’t be running heavy games on the Asus AS54.
For the day-to-day notebook user, a sixth-generation (Skylake) processor with a CPU benchmark CPU benchmark score of 3,900 is more than enough for enthusiast-level media editing on Photoshop among other programs. Apparently, 8GB (seemingly upgradable, swapped it with a pair of 4GB and 8GB to get 12GB) will let you keep dozens of browser tabs open simultaneously. The 256GB solid-state-drive (SSD) is double the 128GB on theHP 15-ay013nr, while the HP 15-ay011nr comes with a roomier 1TB hard drive. While the 256GB SSD makes the system snappier, the 1TB is ideal if you like to store most family snapshots and music files.
The integrated Intel HD 520 graphics card, is typical for the entry-level desktop replacement, and it doesn’t provide much room for heavy gaming. The ASUS F556UA-AS54 managed 30FPS on GTA at low settings (1366-by-768), but you can expect better playability on casual games such as Starcraft 2, Minecraft and League of Legends among other lighter titles. If you need to play some recent game titles but on a budget, the Dell Inspiron I7559-763BLK offers smooth playability and good frames per second (FPS) scores even on modern game titles. That said, the ASUS AS54 still allows you to play some casual games, only at low eye-candy of which you need to pay slightly more to get a dedicated gaming rig such as the ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH71, our top pick for entry-level gaming laptops. The system comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Home (64-bit) which is quite standard for most recent laptops in the same category, lately.
Other Features
On the ASUS F556UA-AS54 you have a decent array of ports. Here we’re talking of three types of USB ports: one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port and the latest Type-C port, which was conspicuously missing in the competing HP 15-ay013nr or even its other iteration the HP 15-Ay011nr. If you need to connect it to your external display, a VGA and HDMI output comes handy, while 802.11 AC-type WiFi+Bluetooth 4.1 card will sort your wireless needs. For media, a DVD burner and an SD card reader are available to access your older movies and files.

Product Description

ASUS Chrome book C201PA-DS02 11.6" Laptop (Navy Blue), Rock chip 3288-C Quad- Core 1.8GHz processor, 4GB DDR3 on board, 16GB SSD + TPM, 802.11AC, Bluetooth 4.0, Chrome OS
Outside of Google’s Pixel Chromebook, Chrome OS powered laptops traditionally feature fairly unassuming, plasticy designs and low-end internals.
The Chromebook C201 is no different and features a dark blue plastic case which, outside of its Chrome and Asus branding, doesn’t feature any notable design features.
While the design does teater on dull, it ticks all the important boxes when it comes to connectivity and portability.
Measuring in at 287 x 194 x 17.9 mm and weighing 0.98 kg, the Chromebook C201 is perfectly satchel sized and light enough to carry around without breaking your back.
It’s also pretty well built. Carrying it around between meetings, the Chromebook managed to survive more than a couple of hairy situations.
These included an accidental drop onto a hardwood floor from a coffee table, as well as an encounter with the a tube barrier while I was sprinting to get the last train. In both situations the Chromebook survived mark and chip free.
Asus' latest Chrome OS laptop is also reasonably well connected by Chromebook standards. The Chromebook C201 features a microSD, micro HDMI, audio jack and two USB 2.0 ports.
Putting aside my grievances about there not being a single newer and faster USB 3.0, my only real bugbear with its design is the Chromebook C201’s use of a proprietary charging port.
The 2013 HP Chromebook 11’s use of a standard microSD charging cable was a serious selling point that made it quick and easy to top up the laptops charge. I’m sad more Chromebook makers haven’t followed suit, though with USB-C being the new vogue item, I can understand why Asus hasn’t used the older connector.
For those looking to video call or conference using the Chromebook C201, Asus has loaded it with an HD front facing web camera, which proved more than competent for chats on Skype and Hangouts during my tests.
The keyboard and touch pad proved equally competent, despite feeling slightly cheap. The plastic keyboard keys have a reactive and snappy feel and are pleasant to type on. The touchpad is also suitably reactive and picks up taps, pokes and two finger gestures hassle-free.

WHAT IS THE ASUS CHROMEBOOK C201?

The Chromebook C201 is the latest laptop from the Taiwanese tech giant Asus to run Google’s cloud-focused Chrome OS.
It doesn’t aim to rework the Chromebook wheel and, like the stellar targets the affordable end of the laptop market .
While not terribly original, the Asus Chromebook C201 is a compelling value for money laptop – if it’s used in areas with solid internet connections.

ASUS CHROMEBOOK C201 – DESIGN

ASUS CHROMEBOOK C201 – DISPLAY

Screen tech is always one of the first areas sacrificed when companies create affordable devices.
This remains true on the Chromebook C201, which features a 11.6-inch 1366 x 786 HD screen. While it matches the cheaper HD 13.3-inch Toshiba Chromebook 2’s resolution, using the Asus laptop, I noticed a few issues with the screen.
For starters, colours on the display are very cool, to the point they look slightly dull and washed out. Reds are particularly washed out and lack any real dynamism. Adding to the screen’s issues, whites have a bit of a murky hue, which hints to me the screen hasn’t been calibrated very well.
